Bantham Beach

Devon

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10The main beach is closed to dogs all summer, but the year-round estuary beach at low tide is a sandy, sheltered alternative with views across to Burgh Island.

Bantham Beach sits at the mouth of the River Avon within the South Devon AONB, with fine golden sand, rolling surf and sweeping views across to Burgh Island. The setting is more sheltered and intimate than the big North Devon surf beaches, and the estuary adds a different character to the usual open-coast experience. Facilities include a large car park, the seasonal Gastrobus food vans, and The Sloop Inn in the nearby village. The beach is privately owned and well-managed, with a gatekeeper who can direct visitors to the right section.

The main beach is off-limits to dogs from 1 May to 30 September, which is a significant summer restriction. However, dogs are welcome year-round on the River Beach north of Hams End — the estuary section — which at low tide opens into a large sandy area with the warm, brackish scent of river mud, tidal pools and washed-up bladder wrack. This is a genuinely rewarding dog friendly beach in its own right, not just a consolation prize. The dog-friendly area can be harder to access at high tide, so timing your visit around lower water is wise. Outside the restricted months, the full beach is superb — excellent for paddling, digging and rock pool exploration. The Sloop Inn welcomes dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Bantham Beach dog friendly?

Bantham Beach is partially dog friendly, which is why it earns a 6/10 on our rating. The main beach has a seasonal restriction, but the River Beach north of Hams End , the estuary section , is open to dogs year-round and is a genuinely rewarding spot in its own right, with wide sands at low tide and views across to Burgh Island. The Sloop Inn in the nearby village also welcomes dogs.

  • Are dogs allowed at Bantham Beach year round?

Dogs are not allowed on the main beach between 1 May and 30 September, which covers the whole of the summer season. However, the River Beach north of Hams End is open to dogs all year round , and at low tide it opens into a large sandy area that's well worth the visit. Outside the restricted months, the full beach is available and excellent for dogs.

  • What should I know before visiting Bantham Beach with my dog?

The most important thing is to time your visit well , both seasonally and with the tides. The dog-friendly River Beach is best accessed at low tide, when it opens into a generous sandy estuary area, so it's worth checking tide times before you head out. The beach is privately owned and well-managed, and there's a gatekeeper on site who can point you in the right direction, so don't be put off if it feels a little unfamiliar on your first visit.
