Challaborough Beach

Devon

Dog Friendly Rating:5/10A sheltered horseshoe cove backed by a holiday park, with seasonal dog restrictions in summer but good access to the coast path for year-round dog walking nearby.

Challaborough sits in a sheltered horseshoe cove just around the headland from Bigbury-on-Sea, backed by the facilities of Challaborough Bay Holiday Park and accessed via a narrow lane that discourages casual passing traffic. The beach is sandy and reasonably well protected from the prevailing winds, making it calmer than some of the more exposed stretches nearby. A surf school and small dive centre operate from the site, and there are cafes, a shop and toilets within the holiday park, all a short walk from the sand. The coast path climbs steeply in both directions, east towards Bigbury and west towards Ayrmer Cove, opening up longer walking options for those who want to extend the day.

Dogs are not permitted on the beach between 1 May and 30 September, which rules out the main holiday season entirely. For dog owners visiting in summer, the South West Coast Path from the car park provides immediate access to the clifftops and the route down to Ayrmer Cove, which is year-round dog friendly and less than a mile away on foot. Outside the restricted months, the beach is open to dogs and the sheltered position and calm water make it an easy, comfortable option. The access road is narrow and unsuitable for long vehicles or those towing trailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Challaborough Beach dog friendly?

Challaborough Beach is dog friendly outside of the summer season, but restrictions apply from 1 May to 30 September, which covers the main holiday period. This earns it a modest 3 out of 5 on our dog-friendly rating. That said, the sheltered cove and calm water make it a genuinely lovely spot for dogs when the restrictions aren't in place.

  • Are dogs allowed at Challaborough Beach year round?

Unfortunately not , dogs are banned from the beach between 1 May and 30 September, ruling out the busiest months of the year. Outside of those dates, dogs are welcome on the sand. If you're visiting in summer, the South West Coast Path from the car park gives you immediate access to the clifftops and leads to Ayrmer Cove, which is dog friendly all year round and only about a mile away on foot.

  • What should I know before visiting Challaborough Beach with my dog?

The key thing to plan around is the seasonal restriction , no dogs on the beach from May through September. The access road to Challaborough is narrow and not suitable for long vehicles or those towing trailers, so keep that in mind when planning your journey. On the plus side, the holiday park has a cafe, shop and toilets close to the beach, and the coast path offers a good alternative walk with a dog-friendly beach at Ayrmer Cove within easy reach.
