Knighton Gorges

Newchurch, Isle of Wight

A 17th century stone house for ten at Newchurch on the Isle of Wight, with views across the Yar Valley, two lounges, a fenced garden with a sunny patio and three dogs welcome.

Book now

Dramatic stone pillars mark the gateway to Knighton Gorges, and they are all that remains of the famous Manor House whose buildings this 17th century property once formed part of. Today this dog friendly home sleeps ten in the East Wight countryside near Newchurch, with shuttered windows that give it the air of a French farmhouse, uninterrupted views across the Yar Valley to the Ventnor Downs, and three dogs allowed.

Inside, a large hall doubles as a reception room, with open stairs rising from it. On the ground floor are a spacious, light lounge with comfy seating, a kitchen with its breakfast area and double oven, a utility, and a dining area whose French doors let the dogs straight out into the garden. A double and a twin bedroom share this level with a shower room.

Up the open stairs, a galleried, south facing second lounge with a Smart TV is a sunny place to relax, with views down the valley like most of the main rooms, and three more bedrooms each have their own en suite. Outside, the fenced garden at the front has a sunny patio, furniture and a BBQ, and gateways lead to pastures grazed by pet sheep who will eat from the hand. Because of the sheep, dogs must be kept under strict control when outside the property.

Rabbits and pheasants abound, and red squirrels and badgers may be seen. Footpaths and lanes criss cross the island and lead down to the River Yar for walks with the dogs, a cycle path along the old train lines runs to Sandown, Newport and Godshill, and Newchurch, 1.5 miles away, has a beautiful church. The sandy beaches of Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde are an easy drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Knighton Gorges dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Knighton Gorges. The ground floor has a dog bed and direct access to the fenced garden via the dining room doors, so your dogs have their own space to settle in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Knighton Gorges year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owners when you book to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Knighton Gorges with my dog?

The owners keep sheep on the land surrounding the property, so dogs must be kept under close control once you're beyond the fenced garden — that's a firm condition of the stay. Beyond that, there's plenty to enjoy: the local lanes, footpaths and the Yar valley are all within reach, and the east coast beaches are an easy drive away.
