Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument

Isle of Wight

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A short clifftop walk for dogs, past Victorian forts to the Yarborough Monument, finishing at a dog friendly pub with sea views.

Culver Down is the chalk headland at the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight, rising to 104 metres between Sandown Bay and Whitecliff Bay, where dogs are kept on a lead past the Charolais cattle that graze the down. Its name is the old word for the pigeons that nest on its cliffs, and the National Trust manages the open land on top. The obelisk of the Yarborough Monument remembers the 1st Earl of Yarborough, founder of the Royal Yacht Squadron; it was moved here in the 1860s when Bembridge Fort, one of the Palmerston forts, was built on its original site. The National Trust's 4.5km circuit starts from the free car park at the fort, visits the 23 metre granite monument, follows the fenced clifftop round the headland above the seabird cliffs, then drops towards Sandown past the landslip amphitheatre of Red Cliff before climbing back. There is about 145 metres of ascent on grassy paths with some stony, slippery chalk.

This dog friendly walk is short and easy underfoot, but it needs care. Charolais cattle graze the downs, so keep your dog on a lead near the herd, and the headland ends in sheer chalk cliffs, so stay inside the boundary fence on the clifftop path. There is no shade or water on the headland, so bring water for your dog on warm days. The Culver Haven Inn beside the monument is described as very walker and dog friendly, and a kiosk opposite sells drinks in season.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument dog friendly?

Culver Down scores a solid 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The National Trust manages the open land on top of the headland, the 4.5km circuit starts from a free car park, and the Culver Haven Inn by the Yarborough Monument is described as very walker and dog friendly, making it a pleasant place to finish your walk.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument?

Dogs need to be kept on a lead when passing the Charolais cattle that graze the down, so you won't have complete freedom to let them roam throughout. The clifftop path also runs close to sheer chalk cliffs, so keeping dogs under close control near the boundary fence is strongly advised even where a lead isn't strictly required.

  • What should I know before visiting Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument with my dog?

There are a few things worth planning for before you head out. There's no shade or water on the headland, so bring plenty of water for your dog on warm days. The grassy paths include some stony, slippery chalk with around 145 metres of ascent, and the clifftop drops away sharply in places, so stay inside the boundary fence. Livestock are present, so leads are essential near the cattle herd.
