Foulridge sits on the Lancashire side of the county line with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal through it and a tunnel a mile long driven under the hill. Little Acre Barn stands up a country lane outside the village, one of a small cluster of conversions, a dog friendly barn for six, three dogs allowed, and a large enclosed garden holding a hot tub.
You come in through the utility, which is where boots come off and paws get wiped, with a WC in there as well. A sliding door opens into the main room and the ceiling goes up with it: stone walls, old beams, a floor to ceiling window full of countryside, and a granite kitchen with a breakfast bar. A farmhouse table sits in the corner, and double doors give onto the patio where three dogs will spend the evening.
Three dogs and six people at the end of a lane, with the nearest thing to a neighbour being a field of alpacas, is a specific kind of week and a good one. The garden is large and properly enclosed, so nobody stands in it holding a lead. There is very little light out here, which makes the hot tub worth using after dark for reasons that have nothing to do with the water.
The canal towpath gives level walking straight out of the village, past the tunnel mouth where a cow once swam the whole mile and was revived with brandy. Colne is the near town. Pendle Hill stands over the country south of here and is visible from most of it. East the lanes climb into the Yorkshire Dales, and dogs go on the towpath, the fields and the hill alike.
