Hambledon is where cricket got its rules written down, on a down outside the village in the 1770s, and it grows England's oldest commercial vineyard on the slopes beside it. Little Yew Tree Lodge sits in the village, a lodge for four with five stars, dog friendly, two dogs welcome, its garden enclosed, lawn, patio and decking, and a hot tub in it fired by wood the owners supply.

One open room does the living under exposed beams, sofas and armchairs one end, the table the other, and patio doors to the garden. The king bedroom comes with a shower room and its own doors onto the lawn; the double has a shower room too, and a separate WC serves everybody. A welcome hamper waits on arrival, the water comes from the lodge's own supply, and two dogs get two doors to the lawn.

The garden is what you book it for. Lawn, then patio, then decking with the furniture, a charcoal barbecue and a fire pit, and the tub at the end of that, all inside one fence, so two dogs have the grass while the people have the fire. By evening the tub is up, the fire is lit and both dogs have found the exact distance from it that suits them.

The Meon valley runs a few miles west, chalk stream country with Old Winchester Hill above it at 4.4 miles, an Iron Age fort on a downland top with orchids in the turf and the valley under it. Two dogs get the down for a long morning and the vineyard slopes for a short one, and the coast is a drive south.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Little Yew Tree Lodge dog friendly?

Yes, Little Yew Tree Lodge welcomes up to two dogs. The garden is fully enclosed, so your dogs can roam the lawn freely while you make use of the patio, decking, fire pit or wood-fired hot tub.

  • Are dogs allowed at Little Yew Tree Lodge year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the enclosed garden and the wood-fired hot tub, it looks well set up for a visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Little Yew Tree Lodge with my dog?

The lodge accepts a maximum of two dogs, and both have direct access to the lawn via doors from the king bedroom and the main living area. The garden is fully enclosed, which means your dogs can be out while you're around the fire pit or in the hot tub without needing to keep a constant eye on the fence line. For walks, Old Winchester Hill is around 4.4 miles away — an Iron Age hillfort on open downland that makes for a good long morning out.
