Llechwedd is a gorgeous stone cottage in a wildlife haven near Machynlleth, reached by a drive up through woodland, and the owner pictures friends and families, the dog included, relaxing here. Its grounds are a nature reserve of beautiful woodland, a stream and an SSSI, with a path leading up towards Pumlumon, so this dog friendly cottage, home for a week to four people and two dogs, comes with walking of its own.

The kitchen and diner comes first, then a hall with plenty of space for outdoor gear, and the dining table sits by French doors to the garden. In the cosy lounge a log burner waits with its first logs supplied, and a second pair of French doors lets the birdsong in while the two dogs wander between the fireside and the garden.

Upstairs, the two attractive bedrooms promise sound sleep and lovely views on waking, and a leisurely start can begin with a bath in the spacious bathroom. The enclosed garden has a picnic bench and a charcoal barbecue, and a deck steps down to a second seating area with fabulous views from sunrise to sunset. Expect the dogs to claim a spot on the deck for the evening.

Beyond the grounds there are footpaths and cycle paths to join, and two dogs can take on Glyndwr's Way or follow the Dyfi Valley Way along the river from Aberdyfi. Machynlleth, 4 miles off on the edge of Eryri National Park, has its Wednesday street market, quirky shops and MOMA Wales, and the long sands of Ynyslas and Aberdyfi and the 3 miles of trails at RSPB Ynys hir are all within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Llechwedd dog friendly?

Yes, Llechwedd welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has an enclosed garden, and the woodland grounds — part of which is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest — can be accessed directly from the door, meaning your dogs can be walked into a nature reserve without getting in the car.

  • Are dogs allowed at Llechwedd year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, but the cottage is set up with year-round dog ownership in mind — there's a hall for wet coats, French doors so dogs can move freely between the lounge and garden, and a bath that, as the description puts it, a dog will probably end up in before the week is out. It's worth confirming directly with the owner if you're planning an off-season visit.

  • What should I know before visiting Llechwedd with my dog?

The access track is a mile long and completely unsurfaced, so be prepared for a rural arrival with your kit and your dogs. Once you're there, the grounds are extensive with a stream running through and woodland walks straight from the door, but the remoteness is the point — water comes from a spring rather than the mains, and the nearest town is Glaspwll. It's a place that suits dogs who like space and owners who like quiet.
