Machynlleth and Parc Circular on Glyndŵr's Way

Powys

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A short, steep circuit from Owain Glyndŵr's parliament town for dogs on a lead into the hills at Parc, returning down the Roman Steps to Y Plas.

Machynlleth is where Owain Glyndŵr held a Welsh parliament in 1404, and the Owain Glyndŵr Centre on Heol Maengwyn is the start of this 5.75km National Trails short walk, a good leg stretch for a dog on the lead. It climbs steeply out of town on a bendy path cut into the slate bedrock and through bracken above a beech wood, then up to the forest edge at Parc, where a short detour leads to a view of Llyn Glanmerin. From there it joins the waymarked course of Glyndŵr's Way on a grassy path past large boulders, descends by tracks through forestry and woodland, and follows a minor road shared with the Wales Coast Path over a gap in the hills. The finish goes down the Roman Steps, 28 carved slate steps and 15 concrete ones, and through the parkland in front of Y Plas, the town's grand house. Expect around 230 metres of climbing.

This dog friendly walk is short but steep, and it suits dogs who like a hill. There is a cattle grid on the way down and open hillside on top, so keep your dog on a lead where sheep may be grazing and on the minor road sections. The woods on the descent give shade, and there is a muddy rut to cross on the climb. The parkland at Y Plas is a pleasant place to finish, and Machynlleth has pubs, cafes and several car parks.
