1 / 16Love Heart Cottage
Wickham Market, Suffolk
A two bedroom cottage for four at Wickham Market in the Deben Valley, with an enclosed lawned garden, a wood burner, doggy extras on arrival and three dogs welcome.
Three dogs. Love Heart Cottage takes that many, which is more than most cottages of its size will entertain, and it makes this a dog friendly bolthole for a couple or a small family who travel with a proper pack. It sits down a quiet lane off the high street in Wickham Market, in a conservation area at the edge of the Deben Valley.
The cottage was renovated in 2022, and it kept a few of its beams. Downstairs the living room runs round a wood burner with board games on the shelf, and the kitchen has everything needed to eat in. Upstairs are a double and a twin that zips into a second double, with the bathroom beside them. A welcome pack and some extras for the dogs are waiting when you open the door.
Behind the house is the enclosed lawn, with a table, a barbecue and a further corner of seating tucked away out of sight, looking out over open country. The River Deben flows nearby, beyond the garden, and horses often pass along the lane, so it is worth knowing where the gate is before three dogs work it out. From the door, a path crosses the water meadows to a 14th century inn in the next village, which makes the obvious first walk and the obvious first supper.
Woodbridge is a short drive down the valley, a riverside town of boatyards and walks along the Deben that dogs take to at once. Sutton Hoo, where the Saxon ship burial was found, sits on the far bank, and Framlingham Castle and the woods of Tunstall Forest are both close enough for a morning.
