Pateley Bridge is a steep stone high street that once won a national title for being one, and it is half a mile downhill from here. Lumberjack Lodge stands above it at the end of an unmade track, a dog friendly stay unusually private for somewhere this close to a town. One bedroom, two people, one dog, an enclosed garden at the back, and nothing visible from any window that is not a hill.

One room does most of the work. Lounge, kitchen and dining sit together behind glass that runs floor to ceiling, so the view is the decoration and a dog on the rug is inside the room rather than shut out of it. A corridor leads to the king bedroom and the shower room beside it. There are no stairs anywhere in the building, and the garden door sits flush with the floor.

One bed, one shower room, one table, and nothing to divide up between you. Two people and one dog, with no attempt at anything larger. What the lodge has instead of size is quiet: a track for a drive, no windows looking in, and a garden a dog can be put out into at six in the morning without waking anybody.

The Nidderdale Way passes close to the track and runs 53 miles round the whole dale, so the walking starts without a car. Upstream the River Nidd widens into Gouthwaite Reservoir, a long sheet of water with a bridleway along one side and enough birds on it to hold a dog's attention from the lead. Downstream the dale flattens into farmland, and either direction from the track gives a week's worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Lumberjack Lodge dog friendly?

Yes, Lumberjack Lodge welcomes one dog. It's set up with dogs genuinely in mind — the living space is open plan so your dog is part of the room rather than shut away, there are no stairs anywhere in the building, and the enclosed back garden means you can let them out early in the morning without disturbing anyone.

  • Are dogs allowed at Lumberjack Lodge year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the lodge is described as dog friendly without qualification. For confirmation of availability at specific times of year, it's worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Lumberjack Lodge with my dog?

The lodge accommodates one dog, so it's best suited to owners travelling as a pair with a single pet. The enclosed garden is a real practical bonus, and the location is excellent for dog walking — the Nidderdale Way passes close to the track and runs 53 miles around the dale, so you can head out on foot straight from the door. Gouthwaite Reservoir is also within reach, with a bridleway along one side, though the birdlife there means dogs will need to be kept on the lead.
