Somebody terraced the garden. It climbs away from a courtyard patio in two planted levels, fenced the whole height of it, which for a cottage on the edge of Ripon is an unusually generous piece of outside. Mad Hatters sleeps four, two dogs are on the booking, and dog friendly in a city means precisely this: a gate at the bottom and somewhere green above it.

The interior is one open room, kitchen built into the end, a dining table next and sofas at the window. A second ground floor room works as a snug with a sofa bed in it, useful for a child or for whoever wants the television to themselves. The bathroom and a separate WC are down here too, and a double and a twin sit at the top of the stairs. A dog need never go above the ground floor.

Saturday morning and both dogs have taken the top terrace, where the sun arrives first, watching birds in the neighbouring trees with an attention that will not turn into action. Somebody is on the patio below with coffee and the crumbs of some toast. The kitchen door has been open since seven. Nobody has raised the subject of the cathedral, which is a mile off and will keep.

The best of Ripon is 3 miles outside it. Fountains Abbey is the largest monastic ruin in the country, standing in its own valley, and the water gardens at Studley Royal follow the Skell below in a chain of ponds, cascades and small temples. Above them a deer park holds several hundred red, fallow and sika on open grass. Dogs go through the whole estate on a lead.
