Malt Kiln Cottage

Whittington, Shropshire

A two bedroom cottage for three at Whittington near Oswestry, with two enclosed gardens, a wood burning hot tub and two dogs welcome.

The hot tub here burns logs, which means somebody goes out and lights it a couple of hours before anybody gets in. That turns it from a switch into an event, and the logs are provided. Malt Kiln Cottage sleeps three at Whittington near Oswestry, dog friendly, a king and a single over one bathroom, with one enclosed garden at the back door and a second beyond it. A cottage this size taking two dogs is a generous ratio, and those two gardens are why it works.

The gardens are what to book it for. The first is at the back door, furnished, and you walk through it into the second, which the owners call the secret garden and which is enclosed as well. Two dogs establish within an hour that there are two of them and that the far one is the quieter. A lockable shed takes the bikes.

Nine at night and the tub has been going since seven, because somebody lit it the moment they got back from the walk. Two dogs are in the near garden where the door is, having declined the far one now that it is dark, and the single bedroom went to whoever resisted least. Nobody is getting into that water in under an hour.

In the middle of the village, Whittington Castle stands in its own moat: a pair of round gatehouse towers and a run of wall, owned and run by the village itself and free to wander into. The Montgomery Canal leaves the south side of it, restored, with a towpath along it and very few boats using it. Two dogs get a castle to walk round and flat water to follow, both from one doorstep.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Malt Kiln Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Malt Kiln Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. For a cottage sleeping just three people, that's a generous allowance, and the setup genuinely suits it — there are two separate enclosed gardens, so dogs can be outside safely from the moment you arrive.

  • Are dogs allowed at Malt Kiln Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. The enclosed gardens and nearby walks along the Montgomery Canal towpath make it a solid option whatever time of year you're planning to visit.

  • What should I know before visiting Malt Kiln Cottage with my dog?

The two enclosed gardens are the real draw for dog owners — there's one right at the back door, furnished and easy to step into, and a second beyond it that the owners call the secret garden. Both are enclosed, so two dogs can get settled and find their own space quickly. Whittington Castle and the restored Montgomery Canal towpath are both walkable from the cottage, giving you a castle to wander round and flat, quiet water to follow.
