Book now

Mawr Well Cottage is a dog friendly retreat in the hills at Cwmdu, with spectacular views of the Black Mountains. Two dogs are more than welcome, and the delightful, spacious traditional cottage sleeps four close to the Brecon Beacons National Park, Bannau Brycheiniog.

Original oak beams, exposed stonework and wooden flooring give the inside its rustic charm, matched with modern comfort. The bright open plan dining area is the place for evening meals together, and it leads into a tastefully furnished lounge with a Smart TV, DVD and CD player, where the dogs stretch out after a day in the hills. The kitchen is fully equipped, and a spiral staircase leads up to a cosy double, a cheerful twin and a large shower room.

Outside, there is seating and a BBQ in the enclosed garden, a tranquil place to soak in the views with the dogs close by. It suits couples, friends and families alike, and walkers most of all, with the Crickhowell Walking Festival each March a much loved local highlight.

This is a peaceful area with walks in every direction, so the dogs can try a different one each morning, and the countryside around also offers cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, sailing, fishing and caving. Tretower Court and Castle is just under 3 miles away, the National Showcaves of Wales, Craig-y-Nos Country Park and the Brecon Mountain Railway are all within reach, and the Hay Festival and Brecon Jazz Festival bring culture to the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Mawr Well Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Mawr Well Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage works well for them — the ground floor runs as one connected space rather than separate rooms, and the enclosed garden gives them plenty of room to roam without any worry about traffic.

  • Are dogs allowed at Mawr Well Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. That's always the best way to make sure everything is set before you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Mawr Well Cottage with my dog?

The main thing to be aware of is the spiral staircase — both bedrooms are reached via it, which may not suit larger dogs. Everything else in the cottage is on the ground floor, so your dogs will have the run of the dining room, lounge and kitchen, as well as the enclosed garden. The surrounding area around Cwmdu is quiet and rural, with more sheep than cars, so it's worth keeping that in mind if your dog isn't reliable around livestock.
