Brecon Beacons: Sugar Loaf from Abergavenny

Monmouthshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A short, sharp climb up Abergavenny's iconic Sugar Loaf, a dog friendly hill walk with grand views and easy off-lead grazing land at the top.

Sugar Loaf is the classic Abergavenny hill, a distinctive cone of bracken and grass rising to 596m on the southern edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). This is one of the most popular dog friendly walks in South Wales, a punchy out and back from the Pentre Lane car park that earns big views over the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and across to the Blorenge in just a couple of hours.

The path climbs steadily through bracken and gorse onto open mountain, where dogs can usually run off lead once you are clear of the lower lanes. Expect to share the slopes with hardy sheep and the wild Welsh ponies that roam the common, so a recall is essential. The summit is a small rocky tor with shelter on most sides. There are no facilities at the trailhead beyond the car park, so bring your own water for the dog. Parking is free at Pentre Lane but the access lane is narrow and single-track.

Dogs can generally be let off lead once you're clear of the lower lanes and onto the open mountain. That said, the slopes are shared with hardy sheep and wild Welsh ponies that roam the common, so a reliable recall is essential before you let your dog run free.

There are no facilities at the Pentre Lane trailhead, so bring enough water for your dog before you set off — you won't find any on the hill. Parking is free at the National Trust car park, but the access lane off the A40 is narrow and single-track, so take it steady on the way in. Full facilities are available back in Abergavenny if you need them after the walk.
