1714, and three centuries of it have passed quietly on a hillside above the Eden, 2 miles out of Appleby. Mid Town Cottage sleeps six and welcomes a pair of dogs. What makes it dog friendly shows from the doorstep: a boot room before any carpet, and a back lawn long enough to hold a set of goalposts.

The ground floor runs in one line. A country kitchen that will cook for six, a lounge holding a wood burner and a French door that a dog learns to stand at by the second morning, then the dining end. Upstairs the super king keeps its beams and a reading corner, with a double and a twin beside it and a family bathroom holding a bath and a shower cubicle. The garage now holds an air hockey table.

Two families is what this house fits. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, three cars on the drive, and a lawn that absorbs children and dogs in any combination. The front garden is the smaller and fully enclosed one, useful last thing at night when nobody wants a walk. The back is where the day happens, and anyone with a dog that likes to be let out on its own terms will use both.

Behind the house the ground lifts to Dufton Pike, a clean cone with a path round its base, and the wood underneath turns blue with bluebells for a fortnight every spring. Great Dun Fell carries the highest tarmac road in England onto the ridge above. West of that the Eden runs through flat green country where a dog goes off the lead early and stays that way.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Mid Town Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Mid Town Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The setup has clearly been thought through with dogs in mind: there's a boot room before you reach any carpet, a small enclosed front garden for late-night outs, and a generous back lawn where dogs can stretch their legs on their own terms.

  • Are dogs allowed at Mid Town Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. If you want to be certain, it's worth checking directly with the property when you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Mid Town Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, and the practical details are reassuring: a boot room at the entrance keeps muddy paws away from the living areas, and the front garden is fully enclosed, which is handy for a quick last outing at night. Beyond the garden, the walking is excellent — Dufton Pike is on the doorstep, the bluebell wood beneath it comes into its own each spring, and the flat Eden valley to the west is the kind of country where dogs can be let off the lead early and kept that way.
