Min yr Afon means the edge of the river, and the name is exact. This dog friendly cottage in the wooded valley of the Aeron, inland from Aberaeron, has a tributary of the river running along the bottom of its garden, woodland on the other side, and room for four people and two dogs, who stay free.

It has been restored with care. Beams, old doors, wooden floors and reclaimed slate remain, and the cottage appeared in Countryfile magazine. The dining room opens to the kitchen, with bi-fold doors onto the garden and the meadows. A wood burner heats the sitting room, the first logs supplied. A single bedroom downstairs keeps the original bread oven, next to the bathroom, and upstairs are a double and a small double. A portable dog shower and an outside utility room with a washer dryer take care of muddy paws.

The rear garden is lawned, landscaped and fully fenced, with rattan furniture. The stream within it is fenced off separately behind a gate the owners keep locked, which is also why the cottage takes no children under ten. Sheep graze the country round about, and beyond the garden dogs must be kept under control at all times. It is a designated dark sky area, and on a clear night the lawn is the place to be, dogs at your feet and the stars thick overhead.

An old railway track runs down the valley into Aberaeron, a harbour town of brightly painted houses, and it makes a fine walk there with the dogs. The beaches of Cardigan Bay are a short drive, and from New Quay boats go out to look for dolphins while the coast path follows the cliffs above.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Min yr Afon dog friendly?

Min yr Afon is a thoroughly dog friendly cottage — up to two dogs are welcome and stay free of charge. The rear garden is fully fenced and lawned, and there's a portable dog shower plus an outside utility room with a washer dryer for dealing with muddy paws after a day out.

  • Are dogs allowed at Min yr Afon year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. What's clear is that dogs are a proper part of the welcome here, not an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting Min yr Afon with my dog?

The cottage sits in sheep country, so dogs must be kept under control at all times beyond the garden boundary. The stream running along the bottom of the garden is fenced off behind a locked gate, so it's safe within the garden itself — this is also why the cottage doesn't take children under ten. You're well placed for walks, with an old railway track leading down the valley into Aberaeron and the beaches of Cardigan Bay just a short drive away.
