Book now

Eight people and one dog, on three floors, with Lundy Island sitting out in the bay. Ocean Escape is a dog friendly house at Westward Ho! built for a group, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a cinema room and a games room, and the sand of Westward Ho! beach a couple of minutes down the road.

The layout is upside down, and it works in its favour. The open plan kitchen, dining and living space is on the top floor, where the sliding doors open onto a balcony and the view runs across the bay. Below it are the two zip and link bedrooms, one with its own balcony and shower room, and the cinema. The enclosed garden is at the back on that first floor level, south facing, with a barbecue and furniture, and that is where the dog goes to lie in the sun.

On the ground floor there are two twin bedrooms, the games room and a separate courtyard at the back with a rack for surf boards and hooks for wetsuits, which is also a useful place to towel down a sandy dog before anyone goes upstairs. A stair gate comes with the house, and there are extras for the dog in the welcome pack.

Westward Ho! beach runs for 2 miles, with rock pools at one end and the pebble ridge at the other, and the South West Coast Path leaves the village along the cliffs towards Clovelly, where a dog is best kept close to heel. The Tarka Trail is nearby for flat miles, and Appledore, Instow and Bideford quay, where the boat leaves for Lundy, are all within a short drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Ocean Escape dog friendly?

Yes, Ocean Escape welcomes one dog. It's a great base for a group trip to the Devon coast, with an enclosed south-facing garden where your dog can soak up the sun, and Westward Ho! beach just a couple of minutes down the road.

  • Are dogs allowed at Ocean Escape year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but it's always worth confirming directly when you book. What we can say is that the setup — enclosed garden, ground floor courtyard for rinsing off sandy paws, and a stair gate included — is designed with dogs in mind throughout.

  • What should I know before visiting Ocean Escape with my dog?

The house is set up thoughtfully for dogs: there's a stair gate provided, a courtyard on the ground floor with space to towel down a sandy dog before heading upstairs, and dog extras included in the welcome pack. The enclosed garden is south facing with barbecue and furniture, so your dog has a safe outdoor space to relax. Note that only one dog is permitted, and if you're heading out on the South West Coast Path towards Clovelly, the listing suggests keeping your dog close to heel along that stretch.
