1 / 17Old Henhouse Retreat
Llanvihangel Crucorney, Monmouthshire
A converted henhouse for six in the Brecon Beacons near Abergavenny, three en suite bedrooms all on the ground floor, mountain views, a large garden and two sociable dogs welcome.
Magnificent rural and mountain views surround Old Henhouse Retreat, a converted henhouse on a Brecon Beacons farm, with walks straight from the door and excellent cycling all around. This dog friendly retreat sleeps six with two dogs, and since its garden borders the neighbouring property, the owner welcomes dogs that are friendly with people and with other dogs. Powerful, intimidating breeds are not encouraged.
A conversion in 2017 gave the old henhouse its light, airy interior and contemporary finish, and the open plan family room has a double height ceiling that adds to the sense of space. Two leather settees face a reclaimed coffee table and the Smart TV, the stylish kitchen leads on from there, and the dining area has doors out to the garden, where the dogs will be keen to go first. Underfloor heating makes it a warming place in any month.
Three bedrooms are laid out across the ground floor, every one en suite: a king with a wet room, where an adjustable shower seat is available, another king with a shower room, and a super king, or twin on request, with a bathroom. During the stay, the furniture and the bedrooms are places the dogs do not go. Outside, a large garden has a patio, tables and seating, with a lawn beyond for the dogs.
Footpaths run from the farm to four pubs, one of them called the oldest pub in Wales, and the dogs can walk to every one. Abergavenny, 3 miles off, has an eclectic mix of shops, markets and food festivals, Blaenavon Iron Works and the Big Pit make interesting days out, and Hay-on-Wye, the town of books, is within easy reach.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Old Henhouse Retreat dog friendly?
Yes, Old Henhouse Retreat welcomes dogs — up to two are allowed. The property has a large enclosed garden, underfloor heating throughout the living space (a real bonus after a muddy walk), and everything is on one floor, so there are no stairs to negotiate.
Are dogs allowed at Old Henhouse Retreat year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it appears they're welcome whenever you stay. That said, it's always worth confirming directly with the property when you book, especially if you're planning around busier periods.
What should I know before visiting Old Henhouse Retreat with my dog?
The retreat accommodates up to two dogs, so it's worth bearing that in mind when planning a group trip. Walking literally starts from the gate, with the Skirrid to the east and the quiet ruins at Grosmont and White Castle nearby — both open ruins where dogs can roam without much of a crowd. The enclosed garden and warm underfloor heating make it a practical as well as comfortable base for dogs and their people alike.
