Old Well Cottage

Baslow, Derbyshire

A two bedroom cottage for four at Baslow on the edge of the Chatsworth estate, with a secure garden behind a locked gate, an open fire and two dogs welcome.

Book now

The bikes live behind a locked gate in the garden, which tells you more about the fencing than any description would. Old Well Cottage takes four at Baslow, dog friendly, sleeping two rooms with a pair of bathrooms, on the edge of the Chatsworth estate. Two dogs are welcome. A gate that actually locks is worth more to somebody arriving with dogs than to anybody arriving with a bicycle.

Inside is a king and a twin that zips together into a super king, with a sleeping platform above it for whoever is young enough to enjoy a low ceiling. There are two bathrooms, an open fire with the first night's logs left beside it, and a utility holding a washing machine and a second fridge. Two dogs come back into a house with somewhere to shake themselves off.

Baslow is the village at the Chatsworth gate, and that proximity is the reason to stay in it. The perimeter walk goes right round the park 2.5 miles from the door, past the house and the deer and along the Derwent, and the parkland stays open to walkers all year. Two dogs with a locked garden to come back to will not ask for a great deal more than that.

Above the village the gritstone edges run north in a broken line. Curbar and Froggatt stand 1.5 miles off, a rim of rock with the whole valley underneath it and a path along the top that barely climbs at any point, while climbers work the boulders in the scree below. Two dogs get the edge path, which is level, long and endlessly interesting to a nose.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Old Well Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Old Well Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has a secure garden with a locked gate, and a utility room where dogs can shake off after a muddy walk — both things that make a real difference when you're travelling with dogs.

  • Are dogs allowed at Old Well Cottage year round?

Yes, the cottage is available year round with dogs, and the surrounding walks are open all year too. The Chatsworth parkland stays open to walkers in every season, so there's no off-season to worry about.

  • What should I know before visiting Old Well Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, so it's worth checking that before you book. On arrival you'll have a locked garden to contain them and a utility room for drying off, and you're 2.5 miles from the Chatsworth perimeter walk — a route that takes in parkland, deer and the River Derwent. The gritstone edges at Curbar and Froggatt are another good option, about 1.5 miles away, with a level path along the top that works well for dogs.
