1 / 24Otterstone Cottage
Yarrow, Northumberland
A two bedroom shepherd's cottage for four above Kielder Water with tiered enclosed decking, a wood fired hot tub and a summer house, two dogs welcome.
Yarrow is a handful of houses along the north shore of Kielder Water, and Otterstone Cottage is one of them, a shepherd's house two hundred years old with an extension on the back. Dog friendly, four across two bedrooms, two dogs, its decking behind enclosed and tiered with a wood fired hot tub on it. Both bedrooms look down the length of the reservoir.
The lounge has a stone fireplace and French doors onto the front garden with the water past it. A second wood burner sits in an inglenook in the kitchen and dining room, a sofa beside it so whoever is not cooking has somewhere to be. The bathroom is on the ground floor, which means a dog in off a forest track never goes upstairs at all. Both kings are above, the lake in each window.
Two couples, or one family of four, and two dogs. What makes the drive worth it is that the outdoor half of this cottage beats the indoor half: the tiered decking, the tub, and a summer house at the side with sofas and throws in it, angled at the lake. The Lakeside Way passes a few hundred metres below the garden, which puts the morning walk on the water's edge.
Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in northern Europe, and the Lakeside Way runs 26 miles round the whole of it, level and surfaced, threading in and out of the trees and crossing the inlets on timber bridges. Dogs are welcome the entire circuit and no traffic touches any of it. Falstone is the nearest village. Past the shoreline the forest carries on a long way in every direction.

Is Otterstone Cottage dog friendly?
Yes, Otterstone Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The tiered decking at the back of the cottage is enclosed, so there's a safe outdoor space for them, and the bathroom being on the ground floor means a muddy dog coming in off a forest track never needs to go upstairs.
Are dogs allowed at Otterstone Cottage year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so they appear to be welcome throughout the year. It's always worth confirming directly with the owner when you book, particularly if you're planning a visit around peak times.
What should I know before visiting Otterstone Cottage with my dog?
The cottage allows a maximum of two dogs, so it's not the right fit if you're bringing more. On the plus side, the Lakeside Way passes just a few hundred metres below the garden — a 26-mile traffic-free trail around Kielder Water where dogs are welcome the entire circuit, so there's genuinely excellent walking right on the doorstep.
