Two hundred years ago this was a shepherd's cottage, and Otterstone Cottage keeps an abundance of that original character while offering the ultimate in cosy comfort. This tranquil, dog friendly cottage for four guests and two dogs looks out over Kielder Water and the forested landscape beyond, with a wood fired hot tub on the decking for watching the dark skies of Northumberland.
The hallway takes the outdoor clothing and boots, and the lounge has a stone fireplace with a warming wood burner, plenty of comfortable seating and French doors with views of the garden and the water. In the kitchen and dining room a second wood burner sits in the inglenook fireplace, with a sofa for chatting to the cook, so the dogs have two fires to choose between of an evening.
Upstairs, both bedrooms are king-size with views of Kielder Water, and the family bathroom with its shower is on the ground floor. Outside, the enclosed two tier decking to the rear has comfortable garden furniture and the hot tub, the place for alfresco dinners with the water as a backdrop while the dogs keep watch for wildlife. To the side, a charming summer house with sofas and throws keeps a tranquil view of the lake at any time of year, with birdsong for company.
Kielder Water and Forest Park has walking and cycling trails full of birdsong and wildlife, and the dogs will happily cover miles of them. This is official dark skies territory, so a trip to the observatory is a must, and in season there is sailing, canoeing and water-skiing. Falstone, 1.5 miles away, has a pub serving food and a great cafe, and Bellingham has shops, pubs and restaurants.
