Watermillock, Cumbria
A three bedroom house for six on the lake side of the road at Watermillock, with a large enclosed garden of lawn and mature trees looking over Ullswater, two dogs welcome.
Watermillock is barely a village, more a line of houses and hotels strung along the shore road on the western side of Ullswater. Rampsbeck House stands on the water side of that road, a dog friendly house for six that takes two dogs, and its garden runs out towards a lake 9 miles long. Very little else on this shore hands a dog that much enclosed ground.
The entrance hall is where coats and boots stop. Past it the lounge has an ornate fireplace, deep sofas and French doors onto the patio, and the dining room next door is laid to eat with the water in the window. The kitchen has a flagstone floor that a soaked dog can be dealt with on, and a utility and WC finish the ground floor. Three double bedrooms sit above, one with a bathroom of its own.
Three couples, or a family that wants the lake more than the town, will get the most from this. The garden is the argument: large, enclosed, mature trees standing over a wide lawn, a picnic table under them and open water in front, so two dogs are turned out into something that reads as countryside rather than a yard. Paddleboards can be hired from the hotel next door.
The head of the lake lies south at Glenridding, where the pier sits and the path climbs to Grisedale Tarn and on to Helvellyn for anybody with the legs. Behind the house the High Street ridge runs north over old Roman ground. Penrith is the market town inland with a ruined castle in the middle of it. A dog can be walked along this shore for most of the water.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Rampsbeck House dog friendly?
Yes, Rampsbeck House welcomes dogs — up to two are allowed. The house has a flagstone kitchen floor that's well suited to muddy or wet dogs coming in from outside, and the garden is large and enclosed, giving your dogs genuine space to roam rather than a token yard.
Are dogs allowed at Rampsbeck House year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the property when booking to confirm availability and any conditions around your stay.
What should I know before visiting Rampsbeck House with my dog?
The house takes a maximum of two dogs, and the entrance hall is where coats and boots — and presumably muddy paws — are dealt with before the rest of the house. The garden is enclosed with mature trees and a wide lawn running down towards Ullswater, so your dogs have plenty of secure outdoor space. Beyond the garden, you can walk dogs along the shore for most of the lake's length, with more ambitious routes heading south from Glenridding towards Helvellyn if you fancy a bigger day out.
