Hidden away in mature walled gardens just outside Ashford in the Water, Red House Cottage sits in the peace and quiet of the rolling Peak District countryside, and a virtually private public footpath sets off from the property. Sleeping four, this dog friendly cottage takes a pair of dogs too, and it has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an enclosed garden.
You come in through the kitchen, fitted with everything for a hearty meal and a dining table for long, lazy breakfasts, and there is ample space for coats and shoes as well as a handy downstairs shower room. After a day hiking the hills, feet go up in the lounge beside the lit wood burner. Dogs are very welcome, with three house rules: they stay off the soft furnishings, they do not go upstairs, and they are not loose on the farm grounds. Upstairs, the double bedroom has lovely views from the bed and an en suite, and the twin is a little further along the hall.
Outside, the enclosed garden is surrounded by mature planting, with bench seating and a BBQ, and it is where two dogs settle while the walking boots dry. For a larger party the cottage can be booked alongside Red House Barn, sleeping ten in all.
Bring the walking boots. The footpath from the cottage opens up a myriad of countryside walks for the dogs, towards Monsal Head and the Monsal Trail or to Little Longstone and The Packhorse Inn. Ashford in the Water is a picture postcard village, with a picnic to be had beside the River Wye at the Sheepwash Bridge, and Bakewell, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are all a short drive away.
