The garden has a second room in it. Rigfoot Cottage keeps a summer house with its own seating out on the lawn, inside a fully enclosed garden that also carries a charcoal BBQ and a table, and the effect is that the best room in this dog friendly cottage for four is the one outdoors. Two dogs can be turned out into it after breakfast and then largely forgotten about.

Indoors, a king size bedroom and a twin share a bathroom with a double headed shower over the bath. One bedroom and the bathroom sit on the ground floor, which counts at the end of a long week for an old dog and for anybody carrying an injury. A wood burner heats the lounge with a basket of logs provided, and a Smart TV covers the hours when nobody can be persuaded back outside.

This is a farm at the eastern end of the Lammermuir foothills, and the enclosed garden is what makes it workable: the summer house takes the adults, the lawn takes everything else, and nobody has to keep hold of a lead in order to finish a conversation. Trout and salmon run in the Whiteadder Water below for anyone who fishes. The rest of the week organises itself around whichever dog wakes first.

The Merse is the name for this stretch of Berwickshire, big arable country rolling east towards the sea and quietly one of the emptiest corners of southern Scotland in which to walk a dog. Thorntonloch's sand lies 8.8 miles off. Paxton House and its woodland stand above the Tweed to the south east, with Coldstream further up the river, and Duns supplies whatever a week needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Rigfoot Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Rigfoot Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The fully enclosed garden is a real selling point — dogs can be let out freely without needing to be kept on a lead, and there's a lawn for them to stretch out on while you make use of the summer house.

  • Are dogs allowed at Rigfoot Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. The wood burner and basket of logs make it a cosy option for cooler months, so it's well set up beyond the summer season.

  • What should I know before visiting Rigfoot Cottage with my dog?

The enclosed garden means dogs have genuine freedom once you arrive — no leads needed to keep them safe while you're outside. The cottage is on a farm in the Lammermuir foothills, so the surrounding landscape is open arable country, and if your dog likes to roam, it's worth being aware of the farming environment beyond the garden boundary. Up to two dogs are welcome, and the nearest beach at Thorntonloch is around 8.8 miles away if you're planning a day trip to the coast.
