Carbis Bay, Cornwall
A cottage above Carbis Bay with a private enclosed garden, a ground floor bedroom for your dog to sleep near, and Porthkidney Beach a mile from the door.
Carbis Bay has the advantage of being twenty minutes' walk from St Ives without being in it, which in July is the difference between a holiday and a queue. Rivington is a detached cottage set back above the bay, two bedrooms with one of them and a bathroom on the ground floor, a wood burner in the lounge, and a dog welcome.
Porthkidney is the reason to take it. The beach is a mile from the door, rates a nine on our map, and gives you a long flat expanse of sand backed by dunes at the mouth of the Hayle estuary. The South West Coast Path from St Ives to Zennor starts at about the same distance and also rates a nine, though it is a serious piece of walking rather than a stroll. Between the two, your dog gets both the easy day and the hard one without moving the car.
Private and enclosed with part of it laid to lawn, the garden pairs with ground floor sleeping to make this workable for one older dog, or for anyone who would rather not do stairs twice in a night. Chysauster Ancient Village is under four miles if you want a walk with something at the end of it, an Iron Age courtyard settlement on open hillside where the going is gentle and the sightseeing takes about ten minutes.
