Robbers Cottage stands on estate ground outside Duns with a large enclosed garden, and that garden is what makes it work as a dog friendly cottage for four: patio, furniture, a BBQ, and space enough that two dogs and a couple of children can all be sent out into it at once without anyone colliding.
The cottage looks over water, and there is fishing on the Whiteadder below it with the Tweed itself within reach for anybody serious about the sport. Inside there is a wood burner, Sky TV for the evenings that go that way, and games and play equipment for whichever part of the party has not yet learned to sit still. Two bedrooms and a bathroom deal with the sleeping, and the dogs will have settled on their spot by the burner before the bags are through the door.
The Whiteadder does a good deal of the entertaining. It runs clear and quick through this corner of Berwickshire, and a dog with any interest at all in water will spend the week soaked to the shoulder and delighted with itself. The Southern Upland Way passes close to the estate for anyone wanting a proper day of distance, and Manderston, which has the only silver staircase in the world, absorbs an afternoon without difficulty.
The coast is near and it is the best of the Borders. St Abbs Head lies east, a nature reserve of sheer cliff where seabirds nest in thousands and dogs walk the top on a short lead. Thorntonloch's sand is 8.3 miles north. Duns has a museum given over to Jim Clark, who won two world championships out of a farm nearby.
