Walk the Shepherds Trail with your four legged friends: Rose Cottage at Shorwell has direct access to it, with beautiful walking trails from the back door and spectacular views along the South Coast countryside towards the white cliffs of Freshwater Bay. Six guests sleep here and two dogs are welcome, and this dog friendly cottage is surrounded by countryside designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Indoors, a light, bright open plan kitchen diner looks over the garden, with space for the whole family at the table and a well equipped kitchen with two fridges, a coffee machine and a washer dryer. Steps lead into an inner hallway with the bunk room, which has its own TV and DVD player, plus a shower room and WC, and the hallway ends in the lounge, where a games console and TV make for a comfortable evening and two dogs snuggle up beside the wood burner.

From the lounge, stairs climb to a king size bedroom and a zip and link twin, made up as one super king if requested when booking, sharing the bathroom. From the dining area, doors open into the fully enclosed garden, mainly laid to lawn, with a patio, outdoor dining and lounge seating and a BBQ, catching the afternoon and evening sunshine while the dogs stretch out on the grass.

Beyond the trail there are many wonderful walking and cycling routes for the dogs, and the island's popular attractions are found locally: The Needles, Alum Bay, Blackgang Chine and Calbourne Water Mill, with Queen Victoria's Osborne House for lovers of history. An open top bus is a fine way to see the island, and the villages of Brighstone and Godshill are worth a wander.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Rose Cottage - Shorwell dog friendly?

Yes, Rose Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has a fully enclosed garden at the back — all lawn, patio and barbecue — so your dogs have a secure space to roam freely, and the Shepherds Trail, an old drove route heading south over the downs to the sea, starts right at the back door.

  • Are dogs allowed at Rose Cottage - Shorwell year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owner when booking to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that the cottage is set up with dogs firmly in mind, with an enclosed garden and trail access from the property itself.

  • What should I know before visiting Rose Cottage - Shorwell with my dog?

The entrance to the cottage is reached via a flight of external steps, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your dog has difficulty with stairs — they'll encounter them before getting inside. The maximum is two dogs, and the enclosed garden is accessed from the dining area at the back of the house, which is where your dogs will be let out rather than the front, which is given over to parking.
