Scotstonrig Cottage

West Linton, Scottish Borders

A five star farm cottage for four near West Linton with an enclosed garden, stabling for one horse and the Pentland Hills up the road, two dogs welcome.

Book now

You can bring the horse. Scotstonrig Cottage keeps stabling for one, arranged directly with the owner, which is not a line many dog friendly cottages get to write. The rest of it is a five star farm cottage for four near West Linton with an enclosed garden holding furniture and a charcoal BBQ, and the two dogs on the booking will spend most of the week deciding what they make of a horse.

The conversion has been done properly. Underfloor heating throughout, a range oven and a Smeg fridge in the kitchen, a boiling tap, and a wood burner in the lounge with the first basket of logs supplied. A king size bedroom and a twin share two bathrooms, one of them with a bath in it. Dogs are welcome on the ground floor and not above it, a rule the owner states plainly, and one worth knowing before you arrive rather than after.

The farm works, and the cottage has never pretended otherwise. There is livestock about, so dogs go out on a lead until you are clear of it and have the enclosed garden to come back to. That trade is the character of the place. You are staying somewhere with a job, and the job carries on around you: the yard busy early, machinery moving, fishing water somewhere below.

West Linton sits at the southern foot of the Pentland Hills, and the Pentlands are why you come. The ridge from Flotterstone runs the tops for as far as a fit dog cares to go, with Glencorse reservoir below it, both 12 miles up the road. Peebles and the Tweed valley are the slower day. Edinburgh is near enough to visit and far enough to forget.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Scotstonrig Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Scotstonrig Cottage welcomes two dogs on the booking. There's an enclosed garden with furniture and a charcoal BBQ to come back to after walks, which makes it a genuinely practical base for dogs and their people alike.

  • Are dogs allowed at Scotstonrig Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. The Pentland Hills nearby are a year-round walking destination, so whenever you visit there's good reason to bring them.

  • What should I know before visiting Scotstonrig Cottage with my dog?

Dogs are welcome on the ground floor only and not permitted upstairs — the owner is clear about this, so it's good to know before you arrive rather than after. This is also a working farm with livestock, so dogs need to be kept on a lead until you're clear of the yard and the animals. The enclosed garden gives them somewhere to roam freely once you're back from a walk.
