Scotstonrig Cottage is a luxurious, detached period cottage in the Peeblesshire countryside with wonderful views of rolling hills, and its fully enclosed, mature garden is a haven for dogs and children. Graded five star and sleeping four, this is a dog friendly retreat where two dogs are welcome, and horse riders can bring a horse too, with stabling for one by arrangement and paddocks on site.

You come in from the garden through a vestibule for the outdoor clothing to a spacious hall. To the left, the lounge has comfy sofas, a Smart TV with a sound bar and a wood burner, with French doors straight out to the garden, and the bespoke kitchen and diner has Smeg appliances, a Quooker tap and a dining area whose French doors open onto a patio with seating. Underfloor heating runs throughout the ground floor, which also has a stylish shower room. Dogs are only permitted on the ground floor, so this level is their domain.

Upstairs, two individually decorated bedrooms, a light and bright king and a pretty twin, have countryside views and quirky feature windows, and the contemporary bathroom has a freestanding bath and a separate shower. Evenings belong to the garden, with the charcoal BBQ lit, the dogs pottering about and the stars out over the countryside. There is a livery on the site, but privacy is guaranteed during your stay.

West Linton, a conservation village, is 4.5 miles away, and the Pentland Hills are 7 miles off for long days of walking with the dogs.
