Scrag Oak is a charming Grade II listed farmhouse in a secluded rural spot at Icklesham, with far reaching views, and it stands right on the 1066 walk, the historic route from Pevensey to Rye by way of Battle. Eight guests and three dogs are welcome in this dog friendly house, which is made for walkers.
A back door leads in through a boot room, the natural place for muddy boots and muddy dogs after a day out, and on into the kitchen with its Aga and a table with church pew style seating. Next door, the dining room seats twelve around a working inglenook fireplace, and the grand drawing room has two large sofas, a working fireplace of its own and views to the countryside. The dogs will find their way to one hearth or the other before long. A cosy snug and a shower room complete the ground floor.
The four bedrooms are on the first floor, among them a master with a high cast iron bed and two twins with zip and link beds, alongside a bathroom and a shower room. Outside there are three large gardens, mostly set to lawn, with several seating areas, a charcoal BBQ, a hot tub close to the house and a beautiful secret walled garden with stone seating. The gardens are not enclosed and livestock may be in the neighbouring fields, so keep the dogs close by while you are out there.
With the 1066 walk passing the house, a day's walking with the dogs can begin without the car. Winchelsea and its pretty shingle beach are a five minute drive away, and a little further on Rye has boutique shops, historic pubs and antique shops.
