South Lodge - Forcett Hall

Forcett, North Yorkshire

A single storey gate lodge for two at Forcett near Richmond with a fenced garden and patio, a king with its own bathroom and a twin, two dogs welcome.

Book now

South Lodge is the gatehouse. It stands just behind the Palladian arch at the entrance to Forcett Hall, so the drive up is grander than the cottage, and the cottage is a good one. Two people, two dogs, and a garden properly fenced rather than left open to the estate, which matters on a dog friendly booking here because the fields beyond hold livestock and are not walked.

Inside the door is a country kitchen and dining room facing the greenery, the room you would expect a gate lodge to lack and the largest one in the building. The lounge is through it. Two bedrooms follow, a king with its own bathroom, freestanding bath and shower cubicle both, and a twin that zips into a super king. All of it is on one floor, so the dogs have no stairs to learn.

Evening, and the wood burner has been lit for effect rather than need. Somebody walked up the path to the Hall earlier purely to look at it and came back saying it had been worth going. Both dogs are asleep on the flags by the door in the attitude dogs take up when they have been walked properly. Outside, the arch stands black against the last of the light.

Forcett is a small estate village in the flat country north of Richmond, and the Brigantian earthworks at Stanwick start at the end of the lane. Egglestone Abbey stands 7 miles west above a bend of the Tees, a ruin of pale stone with the river running over rock below it and a packhorse bridge downstream. Dogs walk the length of that bank, and the lanes here carry little but tractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is South Lodge - Forcett Hall dog friendly?

Yes, South Lodge welcomes up to two dogs. The garden is properly fenced, and the single-storey layout means no stairs for your dogs to navigate — they can settle in from the moment they arrive.

  • Are dogs allowed at South Lodge - Forcett Hall year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that dogs are a genuine part of the setup here, not an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting South Lodge - Forcett Hall with my dog?

The fenced garden is a real plus, but it's worth knowing that the fields beyond the property boundary hold livestock and aren't walked, so you'll need to keep that in mind when heading out. For proper dog walks, Egglestone Abbey about 7 miles west offers a good stretch along the River Tees, and the quiet local lanes carry little beyond the occasional tractor.
