Walks start from the doorstep at Stanwell Barn, an artfully converted barn near Bembridge set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while the dog friendly sand of Whitecliff Bay is a short walk away. It holds a five star grading, sleeps eight across four bedrooms, and takes one large dog, or a pair no bigger than medium, by arrangement.

The open plan living space runs the full length of the barn under exposed stone walls, beams and ceiling trusses. At one end the lounge has ample soft seating, a cosy rug and an open fire, and the dogs make straight for that rug after a long day out. A large farmhouse table sits in the centre for group meals, glazed doors lead through to a light and airy kitchen with a range oven, and at the far end a games area holds a pool table and a bar billiards table.

Three bedrooms sit at ground level, each with French doors onto the terrace, and the king and the double come with en suite shower rooms. A fourth double, with an additional single bed, is reached by a quirky spiral staircase from the lounge and enjoys fantastic rural views. The sunny patio, with furniture and a BBQ, opens onto a large enclosed lawn the owner calls a safe space for garden games with four legged friends, so the dogs join every game.

Set out on foot and make your way up to Culver Down, with panoramic coastal views across Sandown Bay, and from there the coastal path carries a dog south to Sandown and Shanklin or north to Bembridge. Bembridge has a pretty harbour and boutique shops, and Whitecliff Bay keeps its beachside cafes for the walk home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Stanwell Barn dog friendly?

Yes, Stanwell Barn is dog friendly and welcomes up to two dogs. The owners will take one large dog or a pair of smaller ones, so it's worth bearing that in mind when you book. There's an enclosed garden at the back, which is great for letting dogs out safely.

  • Are dogs allowed at Stanwell Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs at Stanwell Barn, but we'd recommend checking directly with the owners to confirm availability for your dates. Given that it's a self-catering barn rental, policies are best confirmed at the time of booking.

  • What should I know before visiting Stanwell Barn with my dog?

The ground floor bedroom effectively becomes the dog's room by default — it's the one place a dog can actually reach, since the spiral staircase to the super king bedroom is naturally off limits. The enclosed garden at the back is handy for outdoor time, and the surrounding area is excellent for walks, with St Helens a 1.6-mile route round the harbour and miles of sand opening up towards Sandown Bay. Just note the two-dog limit, and that the owners prefer one large dog or a pair of smaller ones.
