Tent Lodge Cottage sits just above the shores of Coniston Water on a country estate, with direct access to the estate's private lake shore, and one dog is welcome in school term time. Historically an 18th century stable, it has been sympathetically modernised into a unique, dog friendly retreat for four, with its own sunny, enclosed walled garden and the Coniston Old Man range as a backdrop.
Through the stable door from the courtyard you step into an open plan living, cooking and dining space, contemporary, stylish and airy, yet just right for curling up. The sleek kitchen is well equipped, and the living area has comfy seating, a woodburning stove and a TV and DVD player, and the dog stretches out by the stove after a long day exploring.
Stairs lead from the kitchen to a charming double bedroom with wonderful views of the lake and a pretty twin overlooking the courtyard, with the smart, modern bathroom on the same floor. Outside, the walled garden is a sunny spot for al fresco dining or a refreshing drink with the dog, and the cottage shares its courtyard with four other holiday homes, with extensive gardens and grounds beyond.
The grounds lead down to the estate's lake shore, shared with the other properties, for picnics, paddling and fishing for tiddlers, with jetties for anyone bringing a sailing boat. Coniston village is just over a mile away with shops, pubs, cafes and a bistro, the Boating Centre hires boats and runs trips on the Victorian steam yacht Gondola, and the western edge of Grizedale Forest offers miles of walking and cycling trails for days out with the dog.
