Coniston is a slate village at the foot of its own mountain, on a lake people have gone fast on ever since Donald Campbell brought Bluebird here. Tent Lodge Cottage stands above that water inside the grounds of a small country estate, an 18th century stable made over into a dog friendly holiday cottage. It sleeps four, one dog is welcome in term time, and it keeps a walled garden of its own.
Downstairs is one open room: a woodburning stove set in stone, sofas turned towards it, a dining table, and a sleek kitchen behind. Stairs climb to a double with the lake in the window and a twin over the courtyard, the bathroom between them. The garden outside is sunny, enclosed and this cottage's alone, so a dog can be put out of the door and forgotten about, unlike the shared grounds beyond the wall.
Four people and one dog outside the school holidays is the shape this one is cut to. It cannot be added to a group booking of the other estate houses, so nobody turns up part of somebody else's reunion. What is on offer instead is quiet ground, a garden a dog cannot get out of, and water at the bottom of the slope.
The village is a walk away for a shop or something to eat, and the boating centre hires out anything that floats. Beatrix Potter, Turner and Arthur Ransome all worked over this water, and Swallows and Amazons came out of it. Behind the village the Old Man goes straight up for anybody who would rather climb than paddle, and a dog is welcome along the shore path the length of the lake.
