The Cart Linhay

Meshaw, Devon

A converted cart shed for two and one dog at Meshaw in mid Devon, single storey, with an enclosed lawned garden, a wood-fired hot tub and walks from the door.

A linhay is the open-fronted stone shed Devon farms used for carts and hay, and this one has been closed in and turned into a dog friendly hideaway for two at Meshaw, between South Molton and the edge of Exmoor. It takes one dog, and the lawned garden round it is enclosed for exactly that reason.

The whole thing is on one floor. Patio doors open from the living area onto the lawn, the double bedroom has its own shower room, and the kitchen at the other end has a breakfast bar and a drinks cooler. It sits beside the owners' home with views over the fields, so the dog has a lawn to patrol and a hedge full of things to listen to, and the people have a patio with a barbecue on it.

The wood-fired hot tub is in the garden too. Light it after the afternoon walk, and by the time the dog has eaten and settled the water is hot, the countryside has gone dark and there is no sound but the fire ticking over. It is a short stay kind of place, or a long one for two people who want a week with nothing in it but walks and evenings.

There are footpaths from the hamlet into the surrounding farmland, and Meshaw is placed so that Exmoor and the north Devon coast are both a day out rather than an expedition. Tarr Steps, the old clapper bridge across the Barle, is within reach for a woodland walk by the river, and the long surf beaches at Woolacombe and Saunton, open to dogs outside the summer months, are further on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Cart Linhay dog friendly?

  • Are dogs allowed at The Cart Linhay year round?

Yes, the cottage itself welcomes dogs throughout the year. If you're planning day trips to the nearby surf beaches at Woolacombe and Saunton, it's worth knowing that those are open to dogs outside the summer months only.

  • What should I know before visiting The Cart Linhay with my dog?
