Carts were kept in here through the winter for something like 250 to 300 years. The Cart Shed at Knapton, in the middle of Herefordshire, has been renovated by the owners over time into a single storey, dog friendly cottage for four, with a four poster, a wood burner and room for two dogs.

The owners live next door on a smallholding of pigs, geese, chickens and bees, and their own two friendly dogs may come over to say hello. The cottage has its own enclosed lawn with seating, and beyond it six acres of landscaped grounds, shared with the owners, that guests are free to wander. There are unfenced ponds in the garden, 20 yards from the cottage. This is sheep country, and the owners' rule is a lead on every dog, all the time.

Inside it is all on one level, with an open plan room of kitchen, dining table and a sitting area two steps down round the wood burner, where the first logs are left ready. Underfloor heating runs throughout, and the owners have filled the place with hand-crafted pieces. Guests who stayed with dogs called it spacious, full of character and good for dogs, and it is the kind of cottage where a pair of them fall asleep on warm floors by nine.

A Roman road passes close by and there is an old hill fort nearby. Croft Castle, with the ramparts of Croft Ambrey on the ridge above it, is within reach for a dog walk, and so is Hergest Ridge on the Offa's Dyke Path above Kington. Hereford, with the Mappa Mundi in its cathedral, and the Black and White Village Trail are both close.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Cart Shed year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, and with underfloor heating throughout and a wood burner stocked with a first load of logs, it's a particularly welcoming place for dogs and their owners in cooler months.

  • What should I know before visiting The Cart Shed with my dog?

The owners have a firm rule: dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, both in the grounds and beyond — this is sheep country, so it's non-negotiable.
