The Cottage Tunstead

Tunstead, Derbyshire

A three bedroom cottage for six at Tunstead near Buxton, with a glass gable under a vaulted oak ceiling, an enclosed garden and one dog welcome.

One wall of the living space is glass from the floor to the top of a vaulted ceiling, with the oak frame holding it up on show the whole way. The Cottage sleeps six at Tunstead above Buxton, five star and dog friendly, and the enclosed garden outside holds patio and lawn. One dog is welcome. A room built round its own view earns its keep on the day nobody wants to go out.

The hall was laid out by somebody who had thought about the end of a walk, with room for coats and boots before they reach the house. Past it, one room under the oak holds the lounge, the kitchen and the table, with the wood burner at the far end. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms for six is generous, and one dog with a garden off the back has no reason to be anywhere but in front of the glass.

It suits six people who wanted the high limestone rather than a village street. Tunstead is a scatter of buildings out on the plateau, walled white fields with dales cut into them that you do not see until you are on the edge of one. One dog gets a great deal of quiet and a garden that shuts when the walking has finished.

Buxton, 4.5 miles west, took its own architecture seriously: a Georgian crescent facing the hill, an opera house still running a full season, and glasshouses in the Pavilion Gardens with the river going under them. The water comes up out of the limestone at St Ann's Well, where people have queued for it since the Romans. One dog gets a town built to be walked round rather than driven through.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Cottage Tunstead dog friendly?

Yes, The Cottage Tunstead welcomes one dog. The property has an enclosed garden with patio and lawn, so your dog has a safe outdoor space to enjoy after a day on the high limestone plateau.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Cottage Tunstead year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the cottage is set up well for year-round visits — there's a dedicated hallway designed with the end of a muddy walk in mind, with space for coats and boots before you reach the main living areas.

  • What should I know before visiting The Cottage Tunstead with my dog?

The cottage accepts one dog, so it's worth bearing that in mind if you're travelling with more than one. The enclosed garden gives your dog somewhere secure to wind down after walks, and Tunstead's position on the plateau puts you right on the doorstep of open dales and walled fields — plus Buxton, about 4.5 miles west, is well suited to a dog-friendly wander around town.
