The Cottage is exactly what it is called, a corner cottage on an estate at Whittonstall with 600 acres of private wood and farmland round it. Dog friendly, four across two bedrooms with one dog, its patio garden enclosed and a covered seating area alongside. The woods start at the end of the grass.
Inside is more finished than the name suggests. The lounge has dual aspect windows and French doors onto the garden with a wood burner between, and the kitchen and diner runs from it, a utility beyond. The king bedroom is on this floor beside the bathroom, which carries a roll top and a shower you walk into, and is the room a muddy dog ends up in. Upstairs an arched doorway opens into the super king, with a day bed on the landing for a small child and another WC.
Half seven in the evening and nobody has gone indoors. The covered seating area has a sofa in it and the sofa has been colonised. The dog is out at the edge of the light doing the last patrol, unhurried, because there is nothing past the fence but the estate's own trees. Somebody eventually gets up to lay the burner.
The estate's own tracks are the first walking, and they fill several days without anybody leaving the property. Past that the Derwent valley runs east through woodland with a railway path along the old line and a reservoir at the head of it, which is where the cycling is. Corbridge lies 10.6 miles the other way, a Roman town under a Northumbrian village. Dogs are welcome on the estate ground and the valley paths alike.
