The most northerly town in the Roman Empire, on level open Tyne valley grass that is far gentler going for your dog than the crag top Wall forts.
You walk on the actual Roman road here, and that is a strange feeling. Corbridge was founded well before Hadrian started building the Wall and grew into the most northerly town in the Roman Empire, supplying the Wall garrisons. The original surface of its main street survives, flanked by granaries, workshops, temples and town houses, so this is a place people lived and traded rather than a purely military site.
Whilst you take in the museum's internationally important collection, including the Corbridge Hoard, weapons, jewellery and images of the town's many gods, your dog gets a level, open, grassy site in the Tyne valley, considerably gentler going than the crag top forts along the Wall. That makes it a good option for an older dog or a hot day.
Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds only, with assistance dogs welcome across the site. Free parking for 20 cars sits about 10 metres from the entrance, with more free parking in Corbridge itself. There is a café, shop, toilets, museum and picnic seating.
