Chesters is the cavalry fort, and it sits in a gentler landscape than the crag top forts further west. Around 500 cavalry troops, the elite of the Roman auxiliary forces, were based here in the valley of the North Tyne. Between the fort and the river you will find the finest example of a Roman military bath house anywhere in Britain, which is the part that tends to stop people in their tracks.
Whilst you read the clearly marked layout, follow the family trail and hunt the rubbing stones hidden among the buildings, your dog has riverside grass that is level and green, with mature trees and the Tyne running along the bottom of the site. English Heritage themselves note that visitors usually spend about an hour walking round, which leaves plenty of time for a dog.
Their wording is worth quoting: dogs are more than welcome, kept on a lead and not taken into the museum. There are 56 parking spaces including parent and child and accessible bays. Café, shop, toilets and picnic seating are on site.
