Longnor stands on a ridge with a river valley down either side of it, which is why a village of a few hundred people has a market square in the middle. The Cottage sleeps six there, dog friendly, carrying five stars, with an enclosed lawn behind it that looks back at the roofs. Two dogs are welcome. A ridge with a valley on each side turns one week into two kinds of walking, and a dog will take whichever is going.
Three bedrooms hold a four poster, a twin that makes up as a king and a third the same, two of them with shower rooms attached and a bathroom downstairs besides. Outside is enclosed lawn with furniture, a fire pit and a tub on it, the hills behind and two dogs loose on the grass.
The house is good at six people who do not all want the same day. Two miles north the country does something strange. Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill rise out of the pasture as two thin coral reefs turned on edge, fossil limestone left standing when everything round it wore away, with a path along the spine of the larger. The upper Dove runs below at Crowdecote and Pilsbury, a small river in a green trench. Two dogs get reef knolls and an empty green valley.
