The Old Dairy is a modern barn conversion in a quiet hamlet 2 miles from Alston, finished beautifully throughout and laid out entirely on the ground floor. Two guests and their dog have this dog friendly barn to themselves, set in protected countryside where the walks start right from the front door.
From the hallway you head through to the open plan living space, where a table for two sits in the window looking out onto the garden. There are sofas to curl up on, the dog close by, and a TV for the evening, and down the hall the double bedroom, with plenty of storage, has a shower room with a waterfall shower next door.
Behind the house is a wonderful enclosed garden, large and tranquil, with a lawn, a seating area and views out to the North Pennines. Farmland and livestock surround it, and guests are asked to keep them in mind when they are out there with a dog. It is the place for a slow coffee first thing and a quiet drink later on, the dog lying on the lawn beside the chairs.
Footpaths lead off in every direction, so a dog is never short of a new route into the countryside. Ashgill Force, 5 miles away, is a cascading waterfall reached by a gentle ramble, and Burnhope Seat, the highest fell in the North Pennines, makes a bigger day with superb views from the top. Alston is the nearest village, and Penrith, with its independent shops, restaurants and cafes, is worth a day out.
