In 1675, so the record goes, King Charles II stayed in this building of island stone, once the Niton Rectory. The Old Rectory Retreat is the stylish, dog friendly apartment on its ground floor, all on one level, full of character and home for five guests and two dogs.

A covered porch by the door is where the walking boots and beach shoes come off and the dogs get their paws wiped. Inside, the hallway leads to the large kitchen, where an electric wood burner effect fire and a breakfast table for four make it a sociable place to talk over the day. Then the apartment runs round in its horseshoe: a king size bedroom and the cosy single in one arm, the large but cosy lounge and diner with oak beams, a table for six and another electric fire, and in the second arm the family bathroom with its tub and the second king, which has a garden view.

The garden is reached through the living room at the back, enclosed and south facing, with plenty of seating and a charcoal barbecue, so meals can be taken al fresco. Two dogs go straight out onto it, and supper follows them. Later the reclining seats, the sound bar and the Smart TV take over, and a family film rounds off a long day on the coastal path.

Niton has plenty of local charm, and coastal path walks are within easy reach for the dogs, with panoramic views of the coast and countryside. Ventnor is 4.5 miles away, a famous seaside town with beachside restaurants. Further afield are Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle and surf lessons on Compton Beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Old Rectory Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, The Old Rectory Retreat welcomes up to two dogs. The ground floor apartment has an enclosed south-facing garden where dogs can roam freely, and the circular layout of the interior means they can do a full circuit of the place without retracing a step.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Old Rectory Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given that the apartment is set up with dogs genuinely in mind — enclosed garden, easy interior layout, village walks from the door — it reads as a year-round dog-friendly base.

  • What should I know before visiting The Old Rectory Retreat with my dog?

The entrance has four steps down to the door, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your dog has mobility issues. The apartment is on one floor throughout, with a covered porch for boots and wet gear before you head inside. The village of Niton is right on the doorstep, with walks that lead quickly up into the lanes or down toward the coast — so two dogs get a village, a hill and the sea in a single morning.
