The way in is a garden room, and the owners built it to be walked into by something that has just been in a river. It has seating and a television as well, so it doubles as a second lounge, but the job it does on arrival is the real one: coats off, dog dried, nothing carried through to the rest. The Orchid sleeps six across three bedrooms on the ground floor in Harrogate, dog friendly, one dog on the booking.

Beyond the garden room the kitchen and diner is the middle of the place, bespoke units and room to sit round. A formal dining area sits off the hall with the main lounge past it, wood burner in the chimney and deep sofas either side. The bathroom is a large one, a bath standing clear of the wall and a shower alongside. The three bedrooms are all at the far end, which is where a dog finds the quiet.

At nine on a Friday nobody in Harrogate can see the top of this garden, which is where the hot tub stands under a gazebo, up stone steps and surrounded by trees. The dog has been up the steps twice and back down again, unimpressed. Somebody is carrying food out from the barbecue. Below, the town is a mile of lit windows and none of it audible.

Knaresborough is 4 miles east and is the day out: the Nidd cut a gorge straight through the town, a railway viaduct crosses it in painted stone, a ruined castle stands on the cliff above and a path runs the length of the water below. Dogs use every part of that. West of Harrogate the ground rises into Nidderdale inside a few miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Orchid dog friendly?

Yes, The Orchid welcomes dogs — one per booking. It's a three-bedroom ground floor apartment in Harrogate designed with dogs genuinely in mind, right down to the dedicated garden room at the entrance for drying off muddy or wet dogs before they come through to the rest of the property.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Orchid year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the setup — a proper drying room, an enclosed garden, and easy access to walks in all weathers — it feels built for year-round use.

  • What should I know before visiting The Orchid with my dog?

The property allows one dog per booking, so if you're travelling with more than one it's worth checking with the owners before you book. The garden room at the entrance is the practical detail that makes this place work well for dogs — coats and kit stay there, and nothing wet gets dragged through to the rest of the house. The enclosed garden has a hot tub up stone steps under a gazebo, and Knaresborough is just 4 miles east with a riverside path that dogs can use freely.
