For more than three hundred years The Poplars Cottage has overlooked the village green at St Helens. This Grade II listed thatched cottage keeps its exposed beams and original fireplaces, is a stroll from the beach, and gives four guests a dog friendly home, with a welcome on the ground floor for two dogs no bigger than medium size.

It is the larger part of a detached stone cottage and entirely self contained. From the kitchen diner a door opens onto the garden, and the homely, inviting lounge gathers comfortable sofas and armchairs round a log effect electric fire and the TV, which is where the dogs settle once the day's walking is done. The bathroom, with an electric shower over the bath, is on the ground floor.

Upstairs, two pretty bedrooms, a double and a twin, each have an original feature fireplace and look over the village green to the downs beyond. Outside there are delightful fenced gardens at the front and the rear, with an attractive patio and comfortable outdoor furniture, so meals can move outdoors with the dogs alongside. The owners use the adjoining part of The Poplars as a retreat, and when visiting they have access through the garden to the shed and top gate.

St Helens has a pub, a restaurant and a shop, cricket is sometimes played on the green, and the carnival, sports and fair gather round it each August Bank Holiday weekend. The beach is an excellent swimming and paddling spot, the large, open National Trust area gives the dogs wonderful walks with some of the loveliest views on the island, and Ryde, Sandown, Osborne House, Cowes and Parkhurst Forest, a haven for red squirrels, are all within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Poplars Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, The Poplars Cottage welcomes dogs — up to two, at small or medium size. The cottage has fenced gardens both front and back, and opens straight onto the village green at St Helens, making it a genuinely practical base for travelling with a dog.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Poplars Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owner to confirm availability for your dates. What is worth knowing is that St Helens beach is just 0.6 miles away and the surrounding lanes offer good walking throughout the week, whatever time of year you visit.

  • What should I know before visiting The Poplars Cottage with my dog?

Dogs are limited to two, and they must be small or medium in size — that's the main condition the cottage sets. Dogs are kept to the ground floor, which covers the kitchen, diner, lounge, and bathroom, so they have comfortable access to the main living spaces and the garden without going upstairs. It's also worth noting there's no barbecue, as the thatched roof makes one unsuitable.
