The Village Hall

Shotley Bridge, County Durham

A former village hall for ten at Shotley Bridge in County Durham, with soaring chapel windows, a private hot tub, an enclosed front garden and two dogs welcome.

Book now

The village used to meet here. The Village Hall at Shotley Bridge was once the centre of the community, and it is now a five bedroom dog friendly house for ten, with the original chapel style windows still lighting the main room and two dogs welcome to share it.

That main room is the point. The ceiling soars, three tall windows pour light across an open plan space, and a wood burner warms the living end, with the dining table and a fitted kitchen beyond. It is a room big enough for ten people and two dogs to be in together without anybody tripping over a tail. A few steps down, the lower ground floor holds a king bedroom, a shower room and a utility for the muddy towels.

Out front, the garden is enclosed and furnished, with a large covered terrace for eating outside. There are eight steps within the garden, which is worth knowing with an elderly dog. The private hot tub takes six, and after dark it looks out over quiet countryside while the dogs stretch out by the fire indoors. Upstairs are four more bedrooms, including a master with a super king and its own shower room, and a family bathroom with a freestanding bath.

The Derwent Walk runs along the valley close by, an old railway line through woodland that a dog can follow for miles, and Pow Hill looks out over Derwent Reservoir on the edge of the North Pennines. Hamsterley Forest, Beamish and the cathedral city of Durham are all within an easy drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Village Hall dog friendly?

Yes, The Village Hall welcomes up to two dogs. It's a generous space for people and pets alike — the main open-plan room is large enough that everyone, tails included, has room to spread out, and the enclosed front garden gives dogs a safe outdoor space to enjoy.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Village Hall year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so they appear to be welcome throughout the year. It's always worth confirming directly with the host if you're planning a trip at a quieter time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting The Village Hall with my dog?

The front garden is enclosed, which is great for dogs, but it does include eight steps — something worth keeping in mind if your dog is elderly or has mobility issues. There's a utility room on the lower ground floor for drying muddy towels and kit after walks, and the nearby Derwent Walk offers miles of woodland trails along an old railway line that dogs tend to love.
