The ground floor is one long open space, lounge and dining at the front with a fire, kitchen behind, so nobody is shut away from anybody. Upstairs holds a king and a double with the family bathroom between them, and the second floor another double and a twin under high ceilings with a shower room to serve them. Four bedrooms means two families and two dogs travel together without drawing lots.
Tuesday, late, and the yard door stands open onto a night with nothing in it. Both dogs came in muddy an hour ago and were dealt with on the kitchen tiles. Someone is running a bath on the first floor. On the sofa two people are arguing about whether tomorrow is the day for the long hill, and neither of them has noticed that the older dog has taken the good end of it.
Alston sits where four moorland roads meet and each one goes somewhere worth going. West, Hartside climbs to a pass on the Coast to Coast cycle route with the whole Eden valley below the top of it. South east lie Nenthead and the old lead workings, a strange hollowed landscape that a dog can be walked across for hours. East the road drops into Weardale. A great deal of empty country, and very little of it fenced.
