Coniston village is just over a mile up the road, with shops, cafes and a boat hire centre on the water. The Old Man stands over the whole valley behind it and the paths onto the fell start from the village itself. Nearer the cottage the estate track makes an easy last walk of the day for a dog, with water waiting at the end.
