Town End Farm - The Byre

Airton, North Yorkshire

A two bedroom barn conversion for four at Airton near Malham, with a walled garden below the lane and stone steps down to the door, one dog welcome.

Book now

Town End Farm stands at the top of Airton, three conversions round a yard with a farm shop in the middle, and The Byre is the smallest: two bedrooms, four people, one dog. You go down to it, a flight of stone steps, and that drop is what buys the garden. Walled on all four sides, sunk below the lane, with a patio in it. Dog friendly ground nobody has to fence first.

Inside is one room with two bedrooms off it. Lounge and kitchen share a single floor with a farmhouse table between them, and the entrance hall in front takes the coats, the leads and whatever the dog has carried back from the moor. A shower room opens off the king bedroom. The twin uses the family bathroom, which holds a spa bath and a shower cubicle standing clear of it.

The stone steps are the last obstacle of the day and the dog takes them faster than anyone else here manages. Then the gate, then the garden, and by the time the boots are off it has found the warm flag by the door. Someone puts the oven on. The table gets laid for four because there is nowhere else to eat, and nobody minds.

Airton is a green and a bridge on the River Aire, 3 miles below Malham and off the road everyone else takes. Malham Cove is why most people come: a curved limestone wall with a dry valley behind it and a pavement of clints and grykes on top, Gordale Scar cut into the hill east of it. Dogs go on leads through the sheep, and the lanes back down are quiet enough to drop one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Town End Farm - The Byre dog friendly?

Yes, one dog is welcome at The Byre. The walled garden is a real bonus — sunk below the lane on all four sides, it gives your dog a secure outdoor space without any extra fencing required.

  • Are dogs allowed at Town End Farm - The Byre year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but it's always worth confirming directly with the property before you book, especially if you're planning around busy periods.

  • What should I know before visiting Town End Farm - The Byre with my dog?

Access to The Byre is via a flight of stone steps down from the lane — worth keeping in mind if your dog struggles with stairs. The surrounding area around Malham is sheep country, so dogs will need to be kept on leads through farmland, though the quieter lanes back towards Airton give a bit more freedom. The entrance hall is well set up for returning from a walk, with room for coats, leads and whatever your dog has picked up along the way.
