The owners decorate this house for Christmas, and that tells you what it gets booked for: the whole family and every dog attached to it. Upper Dolcoppice Farmhouse takes nine across four bedrooms at Whitwell, dog friendly, five stars, in a valley in the middle of its own 33 acres, and allows five dogs, the count a family gathering actually arrives with.

Dogs stay downstairs here, so the ground floor is the part to read: a sitting room with windows both sides and a wood burner, a dining room looking onto the garden, a kitchen fitted for nine with two fridges and two dishwashers, and off the door an ante-room with coat cupboards where five dogs and their people shed the farm before the house begins. Breakfast is by the terrace door, which is where the dogs will be.

Upstairs is for people: a king with its own bathroom, a second king with a shower room, two twins and a family bathroom. The dogs-downstairs rule is stated plainly, and it is what makes five workable in a house this smart. No puppies under six months. The garden runs to acres rather than yards, enclosed, with a sheltered terrace and a barbecue, and the rest of the year the house is the same without the tree.

The farm's own paths run out to the public footpaths through down, copse and small field full of wildlife. The coast is a short way south, small sandy coves under the cliffs, and the larger beaches on the east of the island are a quarter of an hour's drive. Five dogs get a farm to start on and an island to finish on, and most weeks they will not get past the farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Upper Dolcoppice Farmhouse dog friendly?

Very much so — Upper Dolcoppice Farmhouse welcomes up to five dogs, which reflects the kind of family gathering it's designed for. The ground floor is set up with dogs in mind, including an ante-room off the main entrance where dogs and their people can shed muddy boots and kit before coming into the house proper.

  • Are dogs allowed at Upper Dolcoppice Farmhouse year round?

Yes, dogs are welcome whenever the house is available to book, not just at peak times. The 33 acres of farm, enclosed garden, and surrounding footpaths make it a good destination whatever the season.

  • What should I know before visiting Upper Dolcoppice Farmhouse with my dog?

Dogs are kept to the ground floor — they're not permitted upstairs, and this rule is what makes five dogs workable in a house this well-finished. Puppies under six months are not accepted, so bear that in mind if you have a young dog in the group.
