Four dogs, throws for the sofas, a freezer set aside for raw food and a hot shower outside for muddy legs. Wagtails was built around dogs from the start, and it shows in every corner. This dog friendly cottage stands just outside Langford Budville, between woodland and open country in the vale of Taunton Deane, looking across to the Blackdown Hills.

The utility room is stocked like a kennel club tuck shop, with towels, poo bags, treats and toys alongside the washing machine and tumble dryer. The living room has seating big enough for people and dogs to share, and the kitchen has a range at its heart. The ground floor has a bedroom with zip and link beds and a day bed, next to a bathroom with a large double-ended bath. Upstairs, up a steep staircase, the king size room has its own shower. A stairgate is supplied.

The garden is large, lawned and well fenced, with three steps between its levels, a big patio, a coal barbecue and a serving area for the food. It is private and looks out over open country. The hot tub has its own seating, and a family with four dogs will find the evenings arrange themselves: the dogs flat out on the lawn, the children in the shared play park nearby, the adults in the tub with plastic glasses.

Walks start at the door, because the cottage adjoins a nature reserve of 200 acres, and a walking guide and a list of dog friendly pubs are left inside. Beyond it, the Blackdowns with the Wellington Monument, the Quantocks and Exmoor are all within reach, and the sands at Minehead are a longer day out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Wagtails dog friendly?

Wagtails was genuinely built around dogs from the start, and it shows. Up to four dogs are welcome, and the cottage comes stocked with throws for the sofas, towels, poo bags, treats and toys in the utility room, a dedicated freezer space for raw food, and an outdoor hot shower for washing off muddy legs after a walk.

  • Are dogs allowed at Wagtails year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, and nothing about the setup suggests otherwise — the cottage is designed for dogs as a core part of the experience rather than an afterthought. For confirmation of availability at specific times of year, it's worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Wagtails with my dog?

The garden is large, lawned and well fenced, so dogs can roam freely outside, and walks begin right at the door as the cottage adjoins a 200-acre nature reserve. A stairgate is provided, which is handy to know if you have dogs that need managing on the steep staircase up to the king size room. A walking guide and a list of dog friendly pubs are left inside, and the wider area — including the Blackdowns, Quantocks and Exmoor — offers plenty of scope for longer adventures.
