Book now

Westbury Retreat sits in the heart of Freshwater, a mere 0.5 miles from Freshwater Bay and its pebble beach and dramatic cliffs, with Tennyson Down beginning at the end of the road. This cosy dog friendly retreat sleeps six and welcomes two dogs, a fine base for walkers and nature lovers on the western coast of the Isle of Wight.

A pretty porch leads to the front door and into a beautiful Victorian tiled hallway. The lounge is cosy and inviting, with a Smart TV and a Victorian fireplace holding a wood burner. That is where the dogs head once the day's walking is over. Down the hall are a generous dining room and a contemporary shower room, and a few steps up is the bright, airy kitchen, with a couple of stools for chatting while the cooking happens. Upstairs, the first floor has been thoughtfully renovated, with a spacious, light filled double, a second double with a Smart TV, a bunk room best suited to children or young adults, and the family bathroom.

The kitchen's French doors give straight onto the private west facing garden. A paved seating area invites you to bask in the sun, while the spacious patio and enclosed garden offer comfortable seating and a BBQ. Supper outdoors comes with two dogs stretched out close by.

Tennyson Down leads up to the Tennyson Monument and its panoramic views of the English Channel, a grand walk with a dog. The Dimbola Museum and Galleries, once home to the Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, is close by, and Afton Down and the Freshwater and Yarmouth Marshes are excellent for birdwatching.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Westbury Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, Westbury Retreat welcomes up to two dogs. The garden is enclosed, which makes it a practical base rather than just a tolerant one, and the kitchen door opens straight out into it — expect your dogs to adopt that door as their preferred entrance and exit for the whole stay.

  • Are dogs allowed at Westbury Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that the location lends itself well to year-round visits — Tennyson Down is open chalk downland, and a wood burner waiting at the end of a winter walk is a reasonable argument for going off-season.

  • What should I know before visiting Westbury Retreat with my dog?

The property takes a maximum of two dogs, and the enclosed garden is a genuine asset — it's described as a proper square of space rather than a narrow strip, which makes a difference when two dogs are out there at once. Freshwater Bay is just 0.3 miles from the door, and Tennyson Down climbs from the western end of the bay offering open turf walking with sea on both sides, so you won't need to drive anywhere to get a good run in.
