Yarmouth to Freshwater Railway Path
Isle of Wight
The old Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway ran along the west bank of the Western Yar for over sixty years before closing in 1953, one of several independent lines that struggled to make money on the sparsely populated west of the Isle of Wight. Its trackbed is now the Causeway, a flat, mostly surfaced path good for dogs of any age, carrying the Yar River Trail and National Cycle Network route 23 for around three miles between Yarmouth and Freshwater. This out and back walk of roughly 6.4km starts behind the main car park on River Road, opposite the ferry terminal in Yarmouth, and follows the estuary shoreline past the old tide mill before joining the railway line for a level, easy walk with the water in view almost throughout.
This is a dog friendly walk with a dog friendly cafe at either end: Off The Rails, in Yarmouth's former station building, serves a dog menu and dog ice cream, and Pedallers along the trail has outdoor seating by a wildlife pond. The flat path is shared with cyclists, so a dog on a lead or with strong recall is safest, and the estuary is an important feeding ground for waders and kingfishers, so keep dogs from running into the reedbeds and mudflats at low tide. There is no livestock and no real climbing, which makes this one of the easiest dog walks on the island. Beyond Freshwater Bay the trail extends towards Watcombe Bay, though that section drops steeply to the shore.

Is Yarmouth to Freshwater Railway Path dog friendly?
Yes, this is a great choice for dogs of all ages and sizes. The path is flat and mostly surfaced with no livestock and no real climbing, and there are dog friendly cafes at both ends — Off The Rails in Yarmouth's former station building even has a dedicated dog menu and dog ice cream, while Pedallers along the trail offers outdoor seating beside a wildlife pond.
Can dogs be off lead at Yarmouth to Freshwater Railway Path?
Dogs with strong, reliable recall can enjoy a good degree of freedom here, but the path is shared with cyclists so some caution is worth bearing in mind. The estuary is also an important feeding ground for waders and kingfishers, so it's best to keep dogs away from the reedbeds and mudflats at low tide to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
What should I know before visiting Yarmouth to Freshwater Railway Path with my dog?
The walk is around 6.4km out and back, starting from the car park on River Road in Yarmouth, opposite the ferry terminal. There are no toilets directly on the path, so it's worth planning ahead, and if you're thinking of continuing beyond Freshwater towards Watcombe Bay, be aware that section drops steeply to the shore, which may not suit all dogs.
